Project description

Problem Statement

The healthcare industry in Canada, still heavily relies on the paper-work which overall is quite time-consuming and lacks efficiency especially when it comes to operation theaters. This gap creates havoc especially when it comes to cardiac surgeries wherein, patients must forget the prescribed instructions from doctors right before the surgery, which would lead to delays.

Target Audience

The company has 2 major products i.e. Operation Assistant and Physician Dashboard.

Operation Assistant is targeted towards cardiac surgery patients who will go through the surgery and have to take care of pre and post surgery.

Physician Dashboard is targeted towards cardiac surgeons and nurses. It connects with the Operation Assistant and provides all patient details to healthcare professionals.

Goals

This category details the major goals the application aims to achieve and help people balance their carbon footprints.

User Research

Carry out user research for Operation Assistant to help understand how users are likely to use it.

Appealing Visual Design

Design mock-ups and interactive prototypes based on the user research for both the products.

Creating Design System

Develop and document design system for the project.

Bringing Consistency Across Platforms

Overall focus on enhancing the user experience of the HealthEase Innovation’s products and bringing consistency across the platforms.

Series A Funding

Help achieve Series A Funding

Project Phases

The product is divided into phases:

  • Phase 1: Creating a design system for Operation Assistant and Physician Dashboard

  • Phase 2: Creating a responsive website for Operation Assistant

  • Phase 3: Designing Physician Dashboard

For this phase, the focus was on creating the design system in order to bring the consistency in among the products on all the platforms.

Before the design system was introduced, the team of developers was missing on small details and aspects of designing like different button states, handling error messages, and so on. Team was focused on hard-core coding which was making it difficult for them to focus on the small and important aspects of designing too.  The lack of inconsistency was not providing a proper user experience, but it was also creating a chaos for the developers to code from scratch every time. Additionally, the inconsistency amongst the products was not looking good on the business perspective as well since it needed the series A funding.

What We Did

The products were available on all the platforms i.e web, desktop, and mobile (iOS & Android). We started with focusing on building a single design system which can be useful across the platforms using the same API and set of properties. This single design system would help developers to switch hassle-free between different development platforms.

The overall focus was to come up with the new design system which works across the platforms, bridge the visual gaps, increase the overall users’ experience, and get the Series A funding.

Design Phase

Based on the data I have gathered from the user research and competitive analysis, I started listing down structures and content for the web app. This clarity helped in rapidly designing the wireframes for the Operation Assistant web version which the company was focusing on using as marketing material.

Design System Documentation

Every design system needs documentation and here along with the team we have tried our best to achieve it. The aim behind this design system was to ensure consistency across the digital platforms.

Outcome of Design System

The major outcome was it increased the productivity of developers and helped the team to work efficiently.

  • The Operation Assistant’s user experience was consistent and cohesive across the digital platforms.

  • It would help stakeholders to turn in funding as and when required.

 Next Steps

The design system will constantly grow and evolve as HealthEase Innovation grows. Carrying out the usability testing of the Operation Assistant will also give some insights in terms of the design system and what things need to be changed.

What I Learnt

This was my first project wherein I learnt the nitty-gritty of creating a design system.

I had a chance to explore the health infrastructure of Canada and also had a chance to interview a cardiac surgeon as a part of user research.

Learned the ins and outs of creating and designing a responsive web-app.
